Records of the International Brigades
- Annotation
The records of Fond 545 reflect activities of the International Brigades and military units which took part in the civil war on the side of the Republican Army of Spain in 1936 – 1939.
The International Brigades and military units were made of antifascist volunteers from many countries and were part of the Republican Army. Among the volunteers were workers, peasants, students, craftsmen, engineers, doctors, military professionals, writers, artists. The documents of Fond 545 were created by the activities of the International Brigades Base’s headquarter and services and all international military brigades and units who fought in Spain. In September 1938, the Central Committee of the Spanish Communist Party took the decision to disband the Interbrigades because of the fascist regime installment in Spain which cruelly oppressed the revolutionaries. The ongoing resistance of the International Brigades voluntaries was recognized as undesirable. Former volunteers were captured by French police and sent to the concentration camps as they were crossing the Spanish – French border. Prior to its archival processing, the documents were on repository in the Joint Archive of the Foreign Personnel Commission of the Spanish Communist Party’s Central Committee. The Commission was one of the Comintern’s sections from 1921 to June 1943. The documents were then transferred to the Executive Committee of the Communist International (ECCI) as a loose assortment of hand-written papers, typed documents and publications. The main language of the collection is Spanish, with many documents in 26 different languages, including French, English, German, Polish, Russian and others.
